On State Television, Iran’s Foreign Minister Defends Nuclear Negotiations

Late Monday, after he posted a series of tweets blaming divisions among Western allies for the failure to strike a deal over Iran’s nuclear program last weekend, the Iranian foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, went on state television in Tehran to discuss the state of the negotiations.

During the interview, which was subtitled and shared online as part of Iran’s social-media outreach to the West, Mr. Zarif reiterated his claim that, for a period of about 48 hours in Geneva, most of the talks were devoted to “discussions among the Western group” to “resolve their own issues.”

“Time was too short,” Mr. Zarif said, for the other six nations to “come to an agreement among themselves, but it was still good to deal with one entity rather than six countries with different views.”
