Renisha McBride Murder Hearing

The Detroit Free Press is live-streaming the hearing of Theodore Wafer, the man charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Renisha McBride. Mr. Wafer, a 54-year-old Dearborn Heights, Mich., man, admitted to shooting Ms. McBride, 19, after he said she banged on his door in the early-morning hours of Nov. 2.

The case has received a great deal of national attention â€" particularly in the wake of the Trayvon Martin killing in Florida â€" because Mr. Wafer is white and Ms. McBride was black. The point of the hearing in Dearborn on Wednesday was to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to take the case to trial.

The CBS affiliate in Detroit reported Wednesday afternoon that “Theodore Paul Wafer was about three feet from Renisha McBride when he opened fire, shooting her in the face, according to testimony in his preliminary examination Wednesday.”

Ms. McBride’s family talked to the media last month in the video, and also the one below.

And last month, The Times’s Monica Davey interviewed the Wayne County prosecutor, Kym L. Worthy, who faced public pressure to pursue the case but said that pressure had nothing to do with her office’s decision to charge Mr. Wafer with second-degree murder and manslaughter.
