Meghalaya: A local resident has decided to ask the Meghalaya High Court for permission to perform mercy killings of three of his sons, who suffer from thalassemia, a blood disorder, an Indo- Asian News Service report in The Assam Tribune said. “I can no longer see my children suffering,” Abdul Rahim, a 50-year-old shoe merchant said, ascribing his troubles to the high costs of treatment.

West Bengal: The Kolkata-based filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh passed away on Thursday from a cardiac arrest, a Press Trust of India report in The Hindu said. He was 49. Mr. Ghosh was the recipient of 12 national awards for his films, most of which were in Bengali.

Chhattisgarh: On Monday, the central government sent 2,000 additional paramilitary troops to the state in the wake of the Maoist attack on Congress Party leaders on May 25 that claimed 25 lives, The Hindu reported. An estimated 30,000 personnel are already stationed in the state to counter Naxal attacks there.

Gujarat: A collision of a chemical tanker and a luxury bus on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway on Wednesday left 14 dead and 41 injured, Daily News & Analysis reported. The accident, which occurred on the Mendhwan bridge, happened when the driver of the chemical tanker lost control and veered across the divider into the path of an oncoming bus. The tanker was carrying polyester resin, a flammable substance, causing greater casualties when the tanker burst in flames.

Karnataka: A candidate fielded by the governing Congress Party won the election to the Periyapatna assembly constituency, according to an Indo-Asian news service report on the NDTV Web site. The election to this constituency was stalled after the death of a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate during the May 5 assembly elections.
