Jammu and Kashmir: An Indian soldier was killed Friday in an incident of unprovoked firing from across the cease-fire line with Pakistan near the Poonch sector, about 110 miles southwest of the summer capital, Srinagar, The Associated Press reported.

West Bengal: Gold coins believed to be from an ancient Indian dynasty dating back to the 4th and 5th century were discovered last week by laborers working at a road construction site in Ahiran in Murshidabad district, The Indian Express reported. More than 50 coins were unearthed, of which 11 have been recovered by government authorities. The coins belong to the Gupta empire, according to experts at the state archaeology directorate.

Meghalaya: A local police officer accused of raping two underage girls is being sought by the state police after he escaped from police custody Sunday, an Indo-Asian News Service report in the Assam Tribune said. Nurul Islam, the accused, was arrested last week for allegedly raping a 14-year-old in a police station on March 13 and then raping her 17-year old sister at gunpoint in their house on March 31.

Rajasthan: The Jaipur police commissioner on Wednesday received a threatening email about a bomb blast planned for June 13, according to a Press Trust of India report in the Hindustan Times. The city police and anti-terrorist squad have launched an investigation that  suggests that it could have been  a prank. The police have released a sketch of a suspect asking people to help identify him.

Uttar Pradesh: Thirteen people were killed and more than a dozen were injured when lightening struck parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, the state officials said Wednesday, according to an Indo-Asian News Service report. The lightning strikes followed several dust storms in the region.

Kerala: Jairam Ramesh, the union minister for rural development, asked the Kerala state government to launch an anti-alcohol campaign in the tribal villages of Attapady in Palakkad district, a Press Trust India report in the Indian Express noted. During a recent visit to the area he urged the tribal villagers to stay away from liquor.
