As my colleague Choe Sang-Hun reports, more than 280 passengers, most of them students, were still unaccounted for Wednesday night as coast guard and navy divers searched a ferry that sank hours earlier off the southwestern tip of South Korea.

Video of the rescue effort released by the Republic of Korea Coast Guard showed survivors being plucked from the sinking ferry by helicopter and boat as the ship slowly capsized.

Late in the day, reports from the Korean news channel YTN showed that the ship had almost completely disappeared under the water as the rescue effort continued.
