Jammu and Kashmir: The longest rail tunnel in India, which cuts through the foothills of the Pir Panjal mountain range, opened for a trial run on Thursday, the Hindustan Times reported. The 11-kilometer, or 6.8-mile, railway track cost the government 13 billion rupees, or $236 million. It will connect Kashmir to the rest of the country via rail for the first time. The track is expected to be functional next year.

Assam: Tea-garden workers allegedly burnt to death the managing director of the Tulapathar tea estate in Tinsukia district, on Wednesday, over the non-payment of salaries and other benefits, the Hindustan Times reported. “The bodies have not been identified. Both the managing director and the garden manager's quarters were torched by a violent mob comprising laborers,” a police official told reporters.

West Bengal: A preliminary medical examination suggested that a three-year-old girl was raped in Goai village, the Indian Express reported. The girl was later abandoned, and authorities are trying to locate her parents.

Karnataka: A man in Hubli abused his one-year-old daughter and burned her with cigarettes, The New Indian Express reported. The baby has been admitted to a local hospital where she's in a critical but stable condition. The paper also reported Friday that an 18-year-old girl, a maid at an a partment in Mangalore, was raped by two groups of men in a span of 24 hours.
