Newswallah: Bharat Edition

Punjab:  Ram Singh, a national level boxer, has told the police that he and Vijender Singh, a 2008 Olympics bronze medal-winning boxer, bought heroin from a drug dealer who was arrested near Chandigarh, Punjab, last week, NDTV reported. The interrogation was part of the drug bust that led to the seizure of 26-kilograms of drugs worth 1.3 billion rupees, or $23 million.

West Bengal:  Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a new cash incentive scheme for female children on Wednesday, The Economic Times reported. The state government has offered a one-time payment of 25,000 rupees, or $460, to girls belonging to families with an annual income of less than 50,000 rupees, or $920, the report noted. The scheme encouraes girls to continue their education and not to get married before the age of 18 years.

Northeast: The Delhi police has trained 32 people from the northeastern states of India, in an attempt of curb violence against people from the northeast who are living in Delhi, according to a Press Trust of India report in The Assam Tribune. These representatives will act as liaisons between the members of their community and the police in case of any emergency, the report said.

Rajasthan: More than 5,000 lawyers in Jaipur have been on a strike since Wednesday demanding higher salaries, cheaper homes and a quicker allotment of government accommodation, IBNLive reported. On Wednesday and Thursday, the group of advocates clashed w! ith the police, resulting in police authorities using tear gas on the crowd. The Rajasthan Bar Association says that 30 lawyers were injured in the clash on Wednesday.

Uttar Pradesh: A local court in the Ghaziabad region on Friday sentenced four men to 10 years in prison for raping a woman, according to The Press Trust of India. The crime was committed in Aug. 2011.

Andhra Pradesh: The chief of a political party that calls for a separate state of Telangana, Chandrasekhara Rao, said that women from the Telangana region would “grind” the governing Indian National Congress party “into paste, just as the way they make dosa pindi (batter),” The New Indian Express reported. Mr. Rao was reacting to minister Vayalar Ravi’s comment, that the creation o Telangana state is not as easy as the preparation of dosa, a popular southern Indian food.
