As news broke about the attack on a police camp near a school in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday morning, not surprisingly it spread quickly on Twitter.
There was a wide range of reactions, reflective of the mixed emotions in India about the Indian-occupied Kashmir Valley, and the role the government plays there.
Tension in the region has increased in recent weeks after the execution of a local man, Muhammad Afzal Gru, for his role in the 2001 Parliament attacks. The Indian government typically keeps a tight rein on social media in Kashmir, limiting Internet access and access to Facebook at times it deems sensitive.
On Wednesday, five officers and two gunmen were killed in the attack, in which four armed men walked onto a busy cricket field and lobbed grenades and fired shots from automatic weapons at the camp. The Hizbul Mujahideen, an organization banned in India, claimed responsibility for the attack, according to local media reports, but Indian officials have not confirmed their identity, except to say that some of the gunmen were from Pakistan.
While some condemned the act and the attackers, others implied it was justified.
Photos said to be of the slain militants circulated on Twitter, and some expressed open support, describing them as âmartyrs.â
The ttack also became a flashpoint for renewed debate about the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, or AFSPA, which grants nearly complete immunity to the armed forces in the troubled region. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently called for a revocation of the act, and on Wednesday others echoed his words.
âWe donât need a special powers Act to face such acts,â Farooq Abdullah, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and father of the current chief minister, said.
The idea was ridiculed by some:
The proximity of a school building and the alleged use of ! sports ki! ts by the militants to carry arms also ignited discussion. Some mocked Indiaâs efforts to improve bilateral ties with Pakistan through âcricket diplomacy.â
India and Pakistan have a long tradition of rivalry on the cricket field, and the game is seen both as âwarâ and a way to break the ice, as one Pakistani TV sports show host put it, when relations are particularly strained.
On Wednesday, the game served as a cover for the militants who allegedly carried ammunition in sports kits and mixed with children playing cricket on the field.
The perverse use of the game led one âNavin Davisâ from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to comment:
Others expressed indignation against what they saw as a use of children as human shields:
Twitter users also took the opportunity to mock the soft diplomacy that has been in play between the two nations. On March 9, Indiaâs External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid hosted Pakistanâs Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf for lunch in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Mr. Raja was on a private visit to a shrine in India and did not hold any official talks. But the significance of the timing of the visit was not lost on some, like Saurabh Kelkar from Pune, Maha! rashtra, ! who said:
Others were more direct in their indictment of Pakistan and called for drastic measures in the face of the attack:
When questioned by journalists about whether the attack targeted the school or the police camp, a spokesperson for the police called it an attack on âpeaceâ in the region. This claim was contested:
