Jammu and Kashmir: Four policemen were killed in a village in north Kashmir on Friday in an ambush by suspected militants, The Indian Express reported.

Assam: India plans to deploy about 1,500 additional “airborne troops” along its border with China in the northeastern region, according to a Press Trust of India report in The Assam Tribune. The ramped-up military presence would be used to check any unwanted presence of adversarial troops within the Indian territory, defense ministry officials told the news agency.

Uttar Pradesh: Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has canceled the reception scheduled in his honor by the Indian consulate in New York on Saturday, according to a Press Trust of India report in The Hindu newspaper. Mr. Yadav has also boycotted a lecture that he was supposed to deliver at Harvard Business School, to protest the brief detention of one of his state ministers, Azam Khan, at Boston’s Logan Airport for questioning. Mr. Khan alleged in a statement that he was singled out for being a Muslim.

Rajasthan: An accident involving an army truck in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district resulted in the death of five soldiers and left four others seriously injured, an IANS report on the NDTV Web site noted. The truck that overturned was carrying a large quantity of ammunition and transporting soldiers of the Gorkha regiment. A court of inquiry has been ordered to look into the incident, according to a defense spokesman, Col. S.D. Goswami.

Tamil Nadu: Cattle are dying in some of the state’s tribal hamlets due to drought, The New Indian Express reported. Villagers say that four to five goats die in their area everyday and condemn officials for not addressing the problem. The traditional occupation of these tribes is rearing cattle and they depend on their animals for livelihood.
