Himachal Pradesh: At least 38 people died and 23 others were injured after a crowded bus fell into the Beas River near Kullu, a hill resort in Himachal Pradesh, on Wednesday, according to an Associated Press report in Live Mint.

Assam: Farmers from the town of Abhayapuri in the Bongaigaon district of Assam threatened to commit suicide Thursday, following poor yields from maize plantations where they used seeds distributed by the state government, Firstpost’s Web site reported. The crop failure has adversely affected the finances of nearly 50 farmers.

Meghalaya: A nonresident Indian originally from Meghalaya won a two-decade legal battle against Meghalaya’s additional advocate general in a land dispute, The Assam Tribune reported. A district court on Tuesday ruled in favor of Tushar Nath Bhatacharjee, a resident of Australia, who accused the senior law official of illegally taking possession of his ancestral land in the capital, Shillong.

Madhya Pradesh: Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said Wednesday that women would make up 50 percent of the candidate slate fielded by Bharatiya Janata Party, which governs the state, for the state assembly elections in November, The Times of India reported.

Maharashtra: Madhu Chavan, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, or B.J.P., and former spokesman of the party’s state unit, has been accused of rape and reneging on promises to marry his victim, according to The Indian Express. A 50-year-old woman who is a former B.J.P. member filed a written complaint with the Mumbai police on Tuesday alleging that Mr. Chavan had been raping her since 1993 and had promised to divorce his wife and marry her, as well as buy her an apartment.

Tamil Nadu: Four men were charged Wednesday with raping two 5-year-old girls, The Express News Service reported. The girls were playing outside a local temple on May 3 when five men lured them with chocolates and raped them, the police said. The fifth man has been detained for questioning, the news service reported.
