Drones Protecting Rhinos in India

India: Drones Protecting Rhinos

Wildlife authorities are using aerial drones to oversee a sprawling natural game park in northeastern India to protect the one-horned rhinoceros from armed poachers. Security officers flew remotely piloted aircraft over the Kaziranga National Park on Monday and will fly drones at regular intervals to prevent poaching in the park in Assam State. The drones are equipped with cameras and will be monitored by security guards, who find it hard to guard the whole reserve, which covers 185 square miles. Poachers killed 22 rhinos last year and have already killed 16 this year.

A version of this brief appeared in print on April 10, 2013, on page A6 of the New York edition with the headline: India: Drones Protecting Rhinos.
