Newswallah: Bharat Edition

­Jammu and Kashmir: A soldier was killed and five others were injured when a grenade accidentally exploded inside an army camp in the Kupwara district in northern Kashmir, according to a Press Trust of India report on the NDTV Web site. The accident occurred when the soldiers were preparing to embark on an anti-militant operation, the report noted.

Assam: As many as 22 public-sector undertakings in Assam incurred losses of 6.5 billion rupees (about $118 million) during 2011-12, according to India’s comptroller and auditor general, a Press Trust of India report said. The national auditor attributed the losses to poor functioning, and said it highlighted the need for greater professionalism and accountability for better performance of these organizations.

West Bengal: A case of swine flu was confirmed in West Bengal on Thursday, the first in three years, NDTV reported. The last case of the respiratory disease in the state was reported in 2009.

Bihar: A local court in northern Bihar’s Darbhanga district sentenced a man to life imprisonment and fined him 10,000 rupees ($183) for raping his seven-year-old niece. The sentence was issued more than two years after he committed the crime, Hindustan Times reported.

Maharashtra: A sting operation by a social worker in Mumbai led to the suspension of 36 policemen, who were caught on camera taking bribes, The Indian Express reported.  Kasam Khan, 50, a resident of Kamgar Nagar in Mumbai, captured the policemen in the act of extorting money from his friend Prakash Naval. Mr. Naval was trying to get government clearance to renovate a dilapidated structure.

Kerala: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is scheduled to tour drought-hit districts from April 13 to April 22, the New Indian Express reported. The state government will also continue to ask the central government for assistance to combat the drought, Mr. Chandy told legislators on Wednesday. Opposition members have accused the government of neglecting the situation.
