Chinese and Indian Soldiers Withdraw From Disputed Territory, India Says

The Indian government confirmed Monday that Chinese and Indian soldiers have withdrawn from the territory they both claim, putting an end to a tense three-week standoff between the world’s two most populous nations.

“The governments of India and China have agreed to restore the status quo ante along Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Western Sector of the India-China boundary as it existed prior to 15 April, 2013,” Syed Akbaruddin, the spokesman for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, said on Monday afternoon.

Salman Khurshid, India’s Minister for External Affairs, will make a previously-scheduled trip to China on May 9, the ministry confirmed Monday afternoon in a statement. “The two Ministers will discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of concern to both sides,” the statement said, as well as a proposed visit to India of the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

“Flag meetings have been held to work out the modalities and to confirm the arrangements,” Mr. Akbarrudin said of the proposed visit.
