Justin Peck, who at 25 is one of the youngest choreographers ever commissioned by the New York City Ballet, is creating a new ballet for the company's annual âNew Combinations Eveningâ on Jan. 31, 2013, the company announced. Mr. Peck's world premiere, set to âSinfonietta LaJollaâ by the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu, will replace a previously announced world premiere by the company's ballet master in chief Peter Martin s.
Mr. Martins' ballet, with a commissioned score by Marc-Andre Dalbavie, has been postponed until the company's 2014 winter season to allow Mr. Dalbavie more time to complete the music.
The company's âNew Combinations Eveningâ pays tribute to George Balanchine's legacy by presenting world premiere ballets on or around the anniversary of his birthday, Jan. 22. Mr. Balanchine died in 1983. In addition to Mr. Peck's work, the evening will include Alexei Ratmansky's âConcerto DSCHâ and Mr. Balanchine's rarely performed âVariations Pour une Porte et un Soupir.â
The new work by Mr. Peck, who also dances with the company, is his third premiere for New York City Ballet. His first piece for the company, âIn Creases,â was set to' âFour Movements for Two Pianosâ by Philip Glass. It premiered in July during the company's annual summer season at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. âIn Creasesâ will have its New York City premiere on May 29, 2 013. His second commission, âYear of the Rabbitâ had its debut in October as part of New York City Ballet's fall season.
All performances are at the David H. Koch Theater, located on the Lincoln Center Plaza at Columbus Ave and 63rd Street. Additional information is at 212-496-0600 and at www.nycballet.com.
