Clint Eastwood faced some empty chairs at North American movie theaters over the weekend: Two new movies, âEnd of Watchâ and âHouse at the End of the Street,â tied for No. 1, followed by Mr. Eastwood's âTrouble With the Curve.â
A crime drama from Open Road Films, âEnd of Watchâ took in an estimated $13 million, a photo finish with âHouse at the End of the Street,â a Relativity-backed horror movie starring Jennifer Lawrence. âTrouble With the Curveâ - the highest profile (and likely most expensive) release of the weekend - came next with about $12.7 million in ticket sales. Mr. Eastwood's now-infamous empty chair speech at last month's Republican National Convention gave this Warn er Brothers film a surge of free publicity, but mediocre reviews and a subject with limited moviegoer appeal (baseball) likely dented ticket sales.
Disney's 3-D re-release of âFinding Nemoâ was fourth, taking in about $9.4 million, for a two-week total of about $30 million, according to Hollywood.com, which compiles box office data. âResident Evil: Retributionâ (Sony) was fifth, selling about $6.7 million in tickets, for a two-week total of $33.5 million. âDredd 3-Dâ (Lionsgate) flopped in its first weekend, placing sixth with estimated ticket sales of $6.3 million.
