Films Tie for Top Box Office Spot

By BROOKS BARNES

Clint Eastwood faced some empty chairs at North American movie theaters over the weekend: Two new movies, “End of Watch” and “House at the End of the Street,” tied for No. 1, followed by Mr. Eastwood's “Trouble With the Curve.”

A crime drama from Open Road Films, “End of Watch” took in an estimated $13 million, a photo finish with “House at the End of the Street,” a Relativity-backed horror movie starring Jennifer Lawrence. “Trouble With the Curve” - the highest profile (and likely most expensive) release of the weekend - came next with about $12.7 million in ticket sales. Mr. Eastwood's now-infamous empty chair speech at last month's Republican National Convention gave this Warn er Brothers film a surge of free publicity, but mediocre reviews and a subject with limited moviegoer appeal (baseball) likely dented ticket sales.

Disney's 3-D re-release of “Finding Nemo” was fourth, taking in about $9.4 million, for a two-week total of about $30 million, according to Hollywood.com, which compiles box office data. “Resident Evil: Retribution” (Sony) was fifth, selling about $6.7 million in tickets, for a two-week total of $33.5 million. “Dredd 3-D” (Lionsgate) flopped in its first weekend, placing sixth with estimated ticket sales of $6.3 million.
