\'Cat\' Revival With Scarlett Johansson Is Set, With Benjamin Walker as Brick

By PATRICK HEALY

Scarlett Johansson will play Maggie the Cat on Broadway this winter in Tennessee Williams's “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” starring opposite Benjamin Walker (“Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson”) as her alcoholic husband Brick, the show's lead producer, Stuart Thompson, announced on Thursday. The theater and television actor Ciaran Hinds will play Brick's irascible father, Big Daddy Pollitt, and the Tony Award winner Debra Monk (“Curtains,” “Redwood Curtain”) will play Big Mama.

It is Ms. Johansson's first return to Broadway from Hollywood since her Tony-winning performance in “A View from the Bridge” in 2010.

“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” will begin preview performances at the Richard Rodg ers Theater on Dec. 18 and open on Jan. 17, 2013. The play, a searing classic about the disintegration of a wealthy Southern family, which won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1955, was revived on Broadway just four-and-a-half years ago in an all-black production, and before that during the 2003-4 theater season.

But Ms. Johansson, who worked with Mr. Thompson on “View from the Bridge,” has wanted to play Maggie for some time, and her kind of box office star power is strong enough for Broadway producers to bring back a play that is already familiar to many theater-goers.

The role of Brick, meanwhile, was discussed with a few Hollywood movie stars â€" including Chris Pine and Jeremy Renner â€" before Mr. Walker landed the part.

The director and Tony-winning choreographer Rob Ashford will stage the revival.
