\'My Name Is Asher Lev\' Coming to Off Broadway

By PATRICK HEALY

The Long Wharf Theater's critically praised production of “My Name Is Asher Lev,” a play based on the Chaim Potok novel about a young artist who clashes with Hasidic Jewish parents, will transfer for an Off Broadway commercial run at the Westside Theater starting in November, the lead producer, Darren Bagert said on Wednesday. The adaptation is by the playwright and director Aaron Posner, who before Potok's death in 2002 collaborated with him on a stage version of another well-known novel of his, “The Chosen.”

The Off Broadway production of “My Name Is Asher Lev” will include the star of the show at the Long Wharf, Ari Brand, who received considerable praise for his performance in the title role; the play will again be directed by Gordon Edelstein, the artistic director of Long Wharf in New Haven. Preview performances are to begin Nov. 8, with an opening night of Nov. 28. The show will be one of a handful of relatively large-budget commercial productions Off Broadway this season, costing about $900,000. Most Off Broadway plays with similar budgets are staged these days by nonprofit theater companies.
