Striking Chicago Musicians Reach Tentative Agreement

By DANIEL J. WAKIN

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra strike appears to have ended after two days. The orchestra and its players, in a joint statement released Monday night, said they had reached a tentative three-year agreement that would take effect retroactively to Sept. 17 if the board of trustees and musicians ratify it.

The players walked out before Saturday evening's concert after talks broke down.

Now, “All previously scheduled C.S.O. activities will proceed as planned,” the statement said. Presumably, that means the rehearsals scheduled for Tuesday, concerts Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, a gala Saturday night and three high profile concerts at Carnegie Hall next week.

The sides were divided over pay and health care costs.
