With its frontman undergoing treatment for drug addiction, Green Day on Monday canceled the rest of its tour dates for this year and said it would postpone concerts scheduled for January and February.
Mike Dirnt, the punk trio's bass player, said in a statement that the health of lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong was still precarious and that he could not perform. âObviously the timing for this isn't ideal, but Billie Joe's well-being is our main concern,â Mr. Dirnt said. âWe are happy to say that Billie Joe is doing well.â
Mr. Amstrong entered a rehabilitation program f or substance abuse in late September after he lost his temper during a performance at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas, smashing his guitar, cursing the sponsors in crude terms and making a rude gesture at the cameras. (He was angry because the sponsors had informed him the band only had a minute left to perform.)
Green Day also announced it was moving up the release date for the third album in a new trilogy of LPs it has made. That album, â¡Tre!â was originally slated to hit record stores and online music sites in mid-January, but will now come out on Dec. 11. The first album â¡Uno!â was released on Sept. 25 and the second, â¡Dos!â, will be available on Nov. 13.
âWe feel bad we have to delay our tour, so to make up for it we want to give our fans the music earlier than we had planned,â the drummer, Tré Cool, said in the statement.
