Adult Swim Orders an Animated Series From \'Community\' Creator

Months after he was dismissed as the show runner of “Community,” Dan Harmon, the creator of that cult NBC comedy, is headed back to television with a project that seems well suited to his elastic imagination.

Adult Swim, the cable channel, said on Monday that it had picked up “Rick & Morty,” a new animated series created by Mr. Harmon and Justin Roiland, a writer, performer and voice actor (“Fish Hooks,” “Adventure Time”). In an e-mail, Adult Swim described “Rick & Mor ty” as “a 30-minute animated series that follows a genius inventor grandfather and his less than genius grandson, and the journeys in life they share.” The new show is expected to make its debut in 2014.

Mr. Harmon, who has also written for animated features like “Monster House,” was fired in May as the show runner on “Community,” where he was well-known for overseeing episodes that stretched the boundaries of live-action comedy - and for clashing with executives over deadlines and other production details.

A new season of “Community,” under show runners David Guarascio and Moses Port, was scheduled to have its premiere on Oct. 19. But days before that date, NBC said it was delaying the show's debut; a new premiere date has not yet been announced.
