\'Fun Home\' Musical Comes to the Public

By ERIK PIEPENBURG

A new musical based on Alison Bechdel's graphic novel “Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic,” with music by Jeanine Tesori (“Shrek,” “Caroline, or Change”) and book and lyrics by Lisa Kron (“Well”), will open the fall season of the Public Lab series of new works at the Public Theater.

Set at a funeral funeral home run by Ms. Bechdel's father, the show, according to a news release from the Public, “charts Alison's quest to come to terms with her father's life and death by painstakingly reconstructing their shared but unspoken bond.”

Sam Gold (“Seminar,” “The Big Meal”) will direct a cast that includes Roberta Colindrez, Judy Kuhn, Beth Malone and Joel Perez.

“Fun Home ” comes to New York after a workshop at the Sundance Institute's Theater Lab this summer. The show is set to begin performances on Oct. 17 and continue through Nov. 4 at the Public's Shiva Theater.

The Public Lab season will also include two plays: Richard Nelson's “Sorry” and Dominique Morisseau's “Detroit ‘67.”
