“Bring It On: The Musical,” a Broadway show about the world of high school competitive cheerleading, will close on Dec. 30, the show's producers announced. When the production ends its run at the St. James Theater it will have played 21 previews and 173 regular performances.

Inspired by the 2000 film of the same name, “Bring It On” received mixed reviews when it opened in August, an uncommon time of the year to open a show on Broadway. In his review for The New York Times, Charles Isherwood called it a “featherweight concoction” that had the feel “o f a daffy lark embarked upon as a summer-vacation goof.”

A week after the show's opening the producers announced it would extend through Jan. 20; it had been scheduled to close Oct. 7. Universal Pictures Stage Productions, one of the producers, said in a statement released on Tuesday that it had decided “to forgo the historically slow month of January and play our final performance on December 30, at the height of the holiday season.”

The show's creative team includes several Tony Award winners. Lin-Manuel Miranda (“In the Heights”) and Tom Kitt (“Next to Normal”) composed the score. Mr. Miranda and Amanda Green (“High Fidelity”) wrote the lyrics. The book is from Jeff Whitty (“Avenue Q”). Andy Blankenbuehler (“In the Heights”) choreographed and directed.
