John Legend, the R&B singer and songwriter, abruptly canceled a North American tour on Thursday that had been scheduled to start later this month, including an Oct. 29 appearance at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn. He said he was having trouble finishing the album he had originally planned to release to coincide with the shows this fall.
In a letter to his fans posted on his Web site on Thursday, Mr. Legend said that he had fallen behind in the studio and had not yet finished “Love in the Future,†his first new album since “Wake Up!,†a retro-soul project with the Roots. The original plan, he said, had been to finish the album and start performing the new songs on this fall's tour, which he had announced would begin in in Clearwater, Fla., on Oct. 16.
But, speaking about the album, he said “the timing hasn't adhered to the schedule.â€
“In other words, we're not done with the album,†he wrote. “And my team and I have made the agonizing decision to put off the tour until 2013, when we know we will have the new music done and will be ready to fully unveil the creative vision through the album and the live experience.â€
Mr. Legend said ticketholders would have their money refunded. The tour was supposed to hit several major cities â€" Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York, Toronto, Houston, Detroit, Chicago and Los Angeles â€" before finishing up in Oakland, Calif., on Nov. 21. Lianne La Havas, the young soul singer from Britain, was to join the tour as his opening act.
Besides the date at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Mr. Legend had intended to play the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, N.J., on Oct. 25. The only show on the tour that will go on as planned is a performance at the Borgata Spa & Resort in Atlantic City on Oct. 27.
