Vanessa Redgrave and Mariam C. Said, the widow of Edward W. Said, the prominent Columbia University scholar, have teamed up for a theatrical piece based on the life and times of Ms. Said's mother in Beirut, the producers announced Tuesday.
âA World I Loved: The Story of an Arab Woman,â written by the pair and narrated by Ms. Redgrave, will play Nov. 28 and 29 at the university's Miller Theater.
The piece - which will include video, storytelling, and song - is based on Wadad Makdisi Cortas's 2009 memoir of the same name, about her life as a student and later principal at a girls' school in Beirut from 1917 to 1974, years of turmoil in the Middle East.
Ms. Said and her daughter Najla Said, an actress, also appear in the piece. Until his death in 2003, Edward Said was among the country's most vocal advocates for Palestinian independence. Ms. Redgrave has been known over the years for her support of Palestinian causes.
Developed for the 2012 Bright on Festival in England, the production is presented in New York by the Public Theater and the Miller Theater. For more information go to www.millertheatre.com or www.publictheater.org.
