Rush and Public Enemy Among Nominees to Rock Hall of Fame

By JAMES C. MCKINLEY JR.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum has announced an eclectic group of 15 nominees for possible induction next spring, including the rock bands Rush and Deep Purple and the seminal rap groups Public Enemy and N.W.A.

Those four groups are nominated for the first time. The rest of the list of nominees for the 2013 ceremony consists of performers nominated in the past who did not make it, and it is all over the musical map.

Disco is represented with Chic and Donna Summer. Blues artists Albert King and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band are on the list, as are the rock groups Procol Harum, Heart and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Electronic music has its nominee: Kraftwerk, the German pionee r of synth-driven songs. Soul music is represented by the Meters, the highly influential New Orleans funk band, and the Marvelettes, one of the great Motown girl groups from the 1960s. Randy Newman, the iconoclastic songwriter, rounds out the list.

Joel Peresman, the president and chief executive of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said the institution, based in Cleveland, had purposely cast a wide net. “The definition of ‘rock and roll' means different things to different people, but as broad as the classifications may be, they all share a common love of the music,” Mr. Peresman said in a prepared statement. “This year we again proudly put forth a fantastic array of groups and artists that span the entire genre that is ‘rock and roll.'”

The winners are selected through a vote by 600 artists, music historians and members of the industry. They will be honored April 18 at a ceremony in Los Angeles.
