\'Big Fish\' Musical to Open in Chicago

By SCOTT HELLER

A stage musical adaptation of the 2003 film “Big Fish” will play a five-week engagement in Chicago next spring, the producers announced on Thursday. Two-time Tony Award-winner Norbert Leo Butz (“Catch Me If You Can”) will star in the show, which has music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa (“The Addams Family”) and a book by the film's screenwriter John August. Susan Stroman (“The Producers”) will be the director and choreographer.

“Big Fish” had been touted for Broadway, but the Chicago plan means it won't get to New York until next season at the soonest. A spokesman for the producers said there was no word on a New York engagement.

The spokesman also said that Mr. Butz's involvement would not interfere with his fall commitment as the lead in “Dead Accounts” by Theresa Rebeck, which opens on Broadway on Nov. 28.

Tim Burton directed the film, about a larger-than-life, tale-spinning Southern father and his son, based on Daniel Wallace's novel. Mr. Butz will play the father, the role handled by Albert Finney in the film.

“Big Fish” opens April 2, 2013 at Chicago's Oriental Theater and is scheduled to run through May 5.
