A stage musical adaptation of the 2003 film âBig Fishâ will play a five-week engagement in Chicago next spring, the producers announced on Thursday. Two-time Tony Award-winner Norbert Leo Butz (âCatch Me If You Canâ) will star in the show, which has music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa (âThe Addams Familyâ) and a book by the film's screenwriter John August. Susan Stroman (âThe Producersâ) will be the director and choreographer.
âBig Fishâ had been touted for Broadway, but the Chicago plan means it won't get to New York until next season at the soonest. A spokesman for the producers said there was no word on a New York engagement.
The spokesman also said that Mr. Butz's involvement would not interfere with his fall commitment as the lead in âDead Accountsâ by Theresa Rebeck, which opens on Broadway on Nov. 28.
Tim Burton directed the film, about a larger-than-life, tale-spinning Southern father and his son, based on Daniel Wallace's novel. Mr. Butz will play the father, the role handled by Albert Finney in the film.
âBig Fishâ opens April 2, 2013 at Chicago's Oriental Theater and is scheduled to run through May 5.
