American Ballet Theater announced on Wednesday its upcoming spring season at the Metropolitan Opera House. As previously reported, it will feature the world premiere of a three-part work set to symphonies by Dmitri Shostakovich by the artist-in-residence, Alexei Ratmansky, and a company premiere of Frederick Ashton's “A Month in the Country,†which is based on the eponymous play by Ivan Turgenev and features music by Chopin.
The company also plans to unveil a new production of “Le Corsaire,†based on the poem by Lord Byron. The choreography is by Konstantin Sergeyev after Marius Petipa, and the staging is by Anna-Marie Holmes after Petipa and Sergeyev.
The first of Mr. Ratmansky's trio, “ Symphony #9,†will actually first be performed next week as part of Ballet Theater's City Center season. The other two segments will have their premieres in May, and the complete trio will be performed in June.
Joining the company's roster as guest artists next year are Alina Cojocaru, principal dancer with the Royal Ballet, and Vadim Muntagirov, principal dancer with English National Ballet.
American Ballet Theater has six full-length ballets scheduled during their eight-week stay at the opera house: John Cranko's “Onegin;†Kenneth MacMillan's “Romeo and Juliet;†“Don Quixote;†“Swan Lake;†choreographed by Kevin McKenzie after Petipa; Ashton's “Sylvia;†and “The Sleeping Beauty,†set to a score by Tchaikovsky.
