A film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical âMemphisâ is in the works. Belle Pictures and the Mark Gordon Company are to announce on Monday that Mark Gordon and Molly Smith will produce the movie with Alcon Entertainment, a Warner Brothers-based production company. Joe DiPietro, who wrote the book and co-wrote the lyrics with David Bryan, will write the screenplay for that tale of two star-crossed lovers living in segregated Memphis in the 1950s.
Directed by Christopher Ashley, with music by Mr. Bryan, the Broadway production won four Tonys in 2010 for best musical, best score, be st book and best orchestration. It closed earlier this year after a run at the Shubert Theater that included 1,166 performances; the show is now touring the United States.
