New Broadway Play to Star Estelle Parsons and Stephen Spinella

By ERIK PIEPENBURG

The Academy Award-winning actress Estelle Parsons (“Bonnie and Clyde”) and the Tony Award-winning actor Stephen Spinella (“Angels in America”) will come to Broadway in the spring of 2013 in “The Velocity of Autumn,” a new play by Eric Coble (“Bright Ideas”), who will be making his Broadway debut. Molly Smith, the artistic director of the Arena Stage in Washington, will direct. A Broadway theater and run dates are to be announced.

Mr. Coble's dark comedy is about an 80-year-old artist, played by Ms. Parsons, who barricades herself inside her Brooklyn brownstone after her family decides to move her to a nursing home. When her estranged son, played by Mr. Spinella, climbs into the home “ the emotional bombs start detonating,” according to a news release.

“The Velocity of Autumn” had its premiere at the Boise Contemporary Theater in Idaho in April 2011, and was produced at the Beck Center for the Arts in Cleveland in April of this year.

Ms. Parsons is currently on stage in New York in “AdA” at La MaMa, giving “a performance of calibrated energy and flamboyance that would tax most actresses 20 years her junior,” Ben Brantley wrote in the New York Times.
