In Ben Lewin's film âThe Sessions,â opening today, John Hawkes portrays Mark O'Brien, a journalist and poet who contracted polio as a child and spent most of his life in an iron lung. This is one of several memorable roles in independent films that Mr. Hawkes has taken on in recent years.
