LOS ANGELES - Members of the documentary branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, overwhelmed by a large number of submissions and the demands of a new voting system, will have some extra time to figure out which 15 documentary feature films will be included on a short list of those eligible for Oscar nominations.
Variety reported, and an Academy official on Tuesday confirmed, that the deadline for the 160 members of the documentary branch to submit their picks has been extended to Nov. 26 from Nov. 14.
Members of the documentary branch have been struggling to watch the 130 competing documentaries, many of which were only recently made available on screeners. Previously, the large number of documentary submissions had been divided up among viewing committees for an initial cut. But a new system this year gives all members of the branch a voice in compiling the list.
The extension will presum ably allow the Academy's documentarians to spend their Thanksgiving holiday viewing documentaries.
