LOS ANGELES - Kenya for the first time joined the countries submitting a candidate for the best foreign-language film Oscar, as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its list of 71 official entries.
The Kenyan entry is a drama, âNairobi Half Life,â which is directed by David âToshâ Gitonga, and tells the story of an aspiring country actor who goes to the big city, Nairobi, in search of fame and fortune.
Notably absent from the list is Iran, which confirmed last month that it would not submit a film in protest of âInnocence of Muslims,â the anti-Islam YouTube video that has sparked deadly riots.
The Academy said the number of entries for the year set a record. Of the 71 films being considered for the foreign-language honor (the full list is here), five will be chosen as nominees. The Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 10, and the Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Feb . 24.
