Having whipped the best-seller lists into submission, E L James's erotic novel âFifty Shades of Greyâ is now inspiring a bit of cultural whiplash with the announcement on Monday that a screenwriter has been hired to adapt the novel into a feature film.
Universal Studios and Focus Features, which in March acquired the movie rights to Ms. James's âFifty Shadesâ trilogy, said in a statement that Kelly Marcel will write the screenplay for âFifty Shades of Grey,â which begins the fetishistic adventures of the wealthy businessman Christian Grey and his inexperienced apprentice, Anastasia Steele.
Among the very different projects that Ms. Marcel has written or contributed to are the Fox television series âTerra Nova,â a science-fiction series sent in earth's dinosaur-dominated past; and âSaving Mr. Banks,â a coming biopic starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as the âMary Poppinsâ author P . L. Travers.
Michael De Luca, who is producing the âFifty Shadesâ film adaptation with Dana Brunetti and Ms. James, said in a statement: âKelly's work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor and depth of character which is particularly visible in the celebrated screenplay for the upcoming âSaving Mr. Banks.'â Mr. Brunetti added, âWe were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelley's engagement with the characters and world E L James has created and we knew she was the right person to augment our âFifty Shades' family.â
No casting or release date for the âFifty Shadesâ film was immediately announced, but don't beat yourself up about it.
