The Juilliard String Quartet alumni association is about to grow. Samuel Rhodes, the group's violist since 1969, will step down from the group at the end of this season, the Juilliard School said on Monday. Roger Tapping, who was born in 1960, will take his place in September, becoming the 14th man (there have been no women) to claim membership in a club that has lasted continuously since 1946. Mr. Tapping, 52, a former member of the Takacs Quartet, teaches viola at the New England Conservatory and will leave to join Juilliard's faculty. Mr. Rhodes, 71, will continue to direct the viola department at Juilliard, the school said. Mr. Rhodes is the second person in the viola position, having taken over for Raphael Hillyer. The last original member to leave the Juilliard Quartet was Robert Mann, the first violinist, who stepped down in 1997. The remaining current members are Joseph Lin and Ronald Copes, violinists, and Joel Krosnick , cellist.
