This week in the New York Times Book Review, Kathryn Harrison reviews “Lionel Asbo,” the latest novel by Martin Amis. The book's title character is a London thug who wins the national lottery and becomes a tabloid darling. Ms. Harrison writes:

Despite a time frame that gallops forward into 2013 and a wealth of irresistibly hyperbolized pop cultural references, “Lionel Asbo” is at heart an old-fashioned novel, earnest in its agenda. The “yttrium credit card,” a few avatars beyond that platinum Amex in your wallet, “reality telethons† and even pit bulls that blaspheme in lieu of barking can't distract us from a theme familiar to the audience of Amis's forebear, Dickens: the corrupting influence of money.

On this week's podcast, Mr. Amis discusses “Lionel Asbo”; Julie Bosman has notes from the field; Deborah Solomon talks about the artist David Hockney; and Parul Sehgal has best-seller news. Sam Tanenhaus is the host.
