\'Mies Julie\' Wins Best of Edinburgh Fringe Award

By STEVEN MCELROY

“Mies Julie,” a smoldering South African stage adaptation of August Strindberg's 1888 drama “Miss Julie,” is the winner of the ninth annual Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh award, to be presented Friday in Scotland.

The winner receives a fully subsidized production in New York City in January. But there is a twist this year: Logistical and scheduling complications will prevent those involved with “Mies Julie” from doing the January production. So, Ms. Tambor said, she has chosen an additional winner: “Midsummer,” with music by David Greig (“The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart”) and Gordon McIntyre.

“Midsummer,” a two-character romantic comedy that Ms. Tambor called a “love letter to Edinburgh,” is not a play in the current Edinburgh Festival Fringe (which runs through Monday) but was one in 2009. “Midsummer” will be presented Jan. 9 to Feb. 3 at the Clurman Theater on West 42nd Street.
