Graphic Books Best Sellers: Color Me Better

By GEORGE GENE GUSTINES

At No. 2 on the hardcover list this week is Volume 1 of the color edition of “Scott Pilgrim,” by Bryan Lee O'Malley. The original softcover version of the series was a regular presence on our sales chart in 2010 as fans counted down the days until the release of the film version starring Michael Cera. (The movie criminally underperformed at the box office.) In August of that year, the six volumes were in the top seven of the paperback list.

The color version of “Scott Pilgrim” is a little taller, a bit wider and a tad thicker than the black and white edition, and the extra space allows the artwork to breathe. In re-reading Volume 1, which is subtitled “Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life,” I found myself as charmed with the series as I was when I read it the first time. As a comic book fan, I'm used to seeing different collections (whether softcover, hardcover, omnibus, archive, masterwork, absolute, ess ential or showcase) of relatively the same material. The usual enticement for “deluxe” editions is behind-the-scenes features. In this area, the color edition of “Scott Pilgrim” does not disappoint. There are around 20 pages of extras that chronicle the road to Volume 1: a short afterword, character sketches, photo references and the original pitch for the series.

As always, the complete lists can be found here, along with an explanation of how they were assembled.
