Cast of \'Assassins\' Revival to Reunite for Roundabout Benefit

By ERIK PIEPENBURG

The original Broadway cast of the Stephen Sondheim-John Weidman musical “Assassins” is reuniting for a one-night-only benefit for the Roundabout Theater Company. Directed by Joe Mantello, the event will take place on Dec. 3 at Studio 54, where the Roundabout production, also directed by Mr. Mantello, opened in 2004.

Reuniting for the event the stars of that production: Becky Ann Baker (Sara Jane Moore), James Barbour (Leon Czolgosz), Mario Cantone (Samuel Byck), Michael Cerveris (John Wilkes Booth), Mary Catherine Garrison (Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme), Alexander Gemignani (John Hinckley), Neil Patrick Harris (Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald), Marc Kudisch (Proprietor), Jeffrey Kuhn (Giuseppe Zangara) and Denis O'Hare (Charles Guiteau).

“Assassins” takes a look at the inner lives of several people - including John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald and John Hinckley Jr. - who have killed or tried to kill American presidents. The show won five Tony Awards, including best revival, best featured actor (Mr. Cerveris) and best direction of a musical (Mr. Mantello). The Roundabout production was originally scheduled for 2001 but was postponed hours after the Sept. 11 attacks because a character, Samuel Byck (played by Mr. Cantone), says he intends to hijack a plane and crash it into the White House.

An earlier version of the musical first opened Off Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in 1991.
