Like their muscles, the box-office drawing power of Sylvester Stallone and his action-hero cohorts appears to be atrophying with age: âThe Expendables 2,â with Mr. Stallone and a muscular ensemble, was the No. 1 movie in North America over the weekend. But its estimated $28.8 million in ticket sales was 21 percent lower than its series predecessor's opening-weekend total, after accounting for inflation. Millennium Films spent about $90 million to make âThe Expendables 2,â which was distributed by Lionsgate.
âThe Bourne Legacyâ (Universal) was second, taking in about $17 million, for a two-week total of $69.6 million, according to Hollywood.com, which compiles box-office data. Placing third with an estimated $14 million in ticket sales was âParaNorman,â which cost Laika, a boutique studio owned by the Nike co-founder Phil Knight, an estimated $55 million to make; Focus Features handled distribution. âThe Cam paignâ (Warner Brothers) was fourth, taking in about $13.4 million, for a two-week total of $51.7 million. âSparkleâ (Sony) was fifth, selling an estimated $12 million. This period film, starring Whitney Houston in her last movie role, cost just $14 million to make.
âThe Odd Life of Timothy Greenâ was a dud, taking in about $11 million for seventh place and a total of $15.2 million since opening on Wednesday; Disney spent about $25 million on production costs.
