\'Silver Linings Playbook\' Wins People\'s Choice Award in Toronto

By MEKADO MURPHY

“Silver Linings Playbook,” the latest film from David O. Russell, received the BlackBerry People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie, based on a novel by Matthew Quick, stars Bradley Cooper  and Jennifer Lawrence as unstable Philadelphians.

The prize, which has gone in the past to “The King's Speech,” “Slumdog Millionaire” and “American Beauty,” can sometimes be a predictor of a film's Academy Award  potential.

People's Choice Awards were also given to Martin McDonagh's ensemble comedy “Seven Psychopaths,” in the festival's Midnight Madness section;  and in the documentary category, to  “Artifact,” about the band 30 Seconds to Mars and its record-label struggles.

Jury prizes were  given for best Canadian feature,  Xavier Dolan's drama “Laurence Anyways,” and best Canadian first feature: a tie between Brandon Cronenberg's body horror thriller, “Antiviral,” and Jason Buxton's high school drama, “Blackbird.”
