Fundamentals From Mira Nair

By MEKADO MURPHY

TORONTO - The director Mira Nair has  comedies, multicultural dramas and period pieces in her filmography, but she hadn't tackled the thriller genre until now. Her latest film, “The Reluctant Fundamentalist,” opened at the Venice Film Festival before playing here in a gala presentation. It was acquired by IFC Films this week for distribution. An adaptation of of Mohsin Hamid's novel, the film follows a young Pakistani man (Riz Ahmed) who goes to the United States to pursue the American dream. But after the 9/11 attacks, the way he is perceived in the country, and subsequently the way he perceives the country, shifts. In the video above, Ms. Nair, who hails from India, speaks about the film and way s she hopes its subject will create both a dialogue and a bridge of understanding between the United States and Pakistan.
