1979 Who Tickets Still Good in Providence

By ROBIN POGREBIN

Thirty-four years would seem an awfully long time to wait to see a concert.

But for a group of hard-core rock fans, that patience is about to pay off.

People who had tickets to the canceled 1979 Rhode Island performance of the Who will finally be able to redeem them when the band ends its Quadrophenia tour in February at the same site, The Associated Press reported.

The concert in Providence was canceled by the mayor at the time, Vincent A. Cianci Jr. who cited safety concerns after a stampede before a show in Cincinnati killed 11 people in December 1979. The band hasn't been back to Providence since.

Tickets for the canceled show are being honored by the Dunkin' Donuts Center and a handful of fans have so far come forward to trade them in. Any redeemed 1979 tickets will be donated to help raise money for the Special Olympics.
