Frank Ocean Cancels European Performances

By JAMES C. MCKINLEY JR.

Frank Ocean has abruptly canceled his European tour, including several festival appearances and a series of high-profile concerts with Coldplay. Mr. Ocean, an R&B singer who drew international attention when he revealed last month that his first true love was with a man, did not give a reason for his decision.

He cut short a concert on Friday at the Oya Festival in Norway after just four songs, complaining about vocal problems, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Then on Saturday he did not show up as planned at the Way Out West Festival in Sweden.

In a statement released on Sunday, he said only that “a tough decision had to be made in regard to my schedule.”

The cancellations se emingly come at a bad time when his first studio album “Channel Orange” (Island Def Jam) is drawing praise from critics and selling well enough to stay at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 album charts, after opening at No. 2.  Just before its release last month, he took a risk with his attention-grabbing revelation, but so far his openness about his sex life does not appear to have affected sales of his record.
