As part of an effort to celebrate Broadway, which contributes $11 billion to the New York economy, the mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment has named its first annual Spotlight Award winners. Among them are Chita Rivera, the actress and dancer; Charles Strouse, the composer of âBye Bye Birdieâ and âAnnieâ; Arlene Dahl, the actress and author; and Tommy Tune, the actor, director and choreographer.
The awards, which ârecognize and honor individuals in the theatrical community who have made a significant contribution to Broadway over a 10 year period,â will be announced on Sunday as part of Broadway on Broadway, a free concert in which cast members from new and continuing shows perform in T imes Square.
The other winners are better known inside the industry than to the general public. They are Nick Wyman, the president of Actors' Equity Association; Matthew D. Loeb, the president of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees; James D. Nederlander, the chairman of the Nederlander Organization; and Nina Lannan, a veteran general manager and tour manager for Broadway shows.
Along with the awards, the mayor's office and the Broadway League, a trade association of theater owners and producers, are underwriting a series of videos that trace the history of each of Broadway's 40 theaters. The first set will be viewable on Sunday at SpotlightOnBroadway.com.
