âWar Horse,â the hit Broadway play about a British boy and his friendship with a horse which is tested by World War I, will close on Jan. 6, 2013, at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, the show's producers announced on Tuesday. When it closes it will have played 718 performances and 33 previews.
After successful runs at London's National Theater and in the West End, âWar Horseâ opened at the Beaumont, Lincoln Center Theater's Broadway house, in April 2011. It won five Tony Awards, including best play, and was especially celebrated for the use of life-size puppets to depict horses. (The South African Handspring Puppet Company won an additional special Tony for its efforts.)
Once one of the hott est tickets on Broadway, the box-office grosses for âWar Horseâ started to slip this spring and summer, with capacity dipping to 61.8 percent the last week of July. The show's worst numbers came for the week ending Aug. 5, when it filled 59.7 percent of the Beaumont's 1,100 seats. Since then its box office has rebounded: the show filled 84.3 percent of its seats for the week ending Sept. 2, the most recent period for which numbers are available.
A spokesman for the show said producers were not immediately available for comment.
âWar Horseâ will continue to have life onstage after it closes in New York, with productions running in London and Toronto. A U.S. touring production opened in June in Los Angeles.
