From Film to Broadway, but Changes in Schedule

By LARRY ROHTER

Two new musicals bound for Broadway next spring are taking unexpected detours. “Diner,” based on the hit film of the same title, is postponing a San Francisco run that had been scheduled for October and November, while “Honeymoon in Vegas,” also based on a popular movie, has canceled performances planned for late this year in Toronto.

“Honeymoon in Vegas” will be directed by Gary Griffin and is scheduled to star Tony Danza, best known for his television roles in “Taxi” and “Who's the Boss,” though he also has Broadway and cabaret credits. “Diner” is written by Barry Levinson, who directed and wrote the screenplay of the 1982 film, and has music and lyrics by Sheryl Crow; both are making their Broadway debuts with the project, which is being directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall, whose most recent Broadway credits are “Nice Work if You Can Get It” and “Anything Goes.”

Pre-Broadwa y tryouts for shows are sometimes canceled because creative teams need more time to improve the production. For “Diner,” the producers say they are backing away from the San Francisco run to retool the show to fit better into a smaller Broadway theater, instead of one of the bigger houses. Roy Gabay, a producer of “Honeymoon in Vegas,” did not respond to telephone calls asking for details of the announced scheduling conflict causing the cancellation of the Toronto run.
