The heavy-hitters in the rapidly growing comedy podcast universe are mostly located on the West Coast. Marc Maron's âWTFâ and âComedy Bang! Bang!â are based in Los Angeles, as are the major podcast networks like Earwolf, Nerdist and Maximum Fun. But this geographic imbalance might start to change with the announcement, scheduled for Monday, that Splitsider, the popular New York comedy site under the umbrella of The Awl Web family, is starting its own podcast network.
Each podcast will have a homepage on the site and be promoted as a news item. Splitsider will also help sell ads, book guests and put together live shows with talent from the podcasts. Splitsider will start a new improv-based podcast called âMake Yourself Comfy With Abra Tabak,â but its slate already has six other podcasts, including âYou Had to Be There,â a show starring Nikki Glaser and Sara Schaefer that was recently turned into an MTV seri es set for 2013; âThe Complete Guide to Everything,â featuring Tim Daniels and Tom Reynolds challenging Wikipedia; and âThe Jeff Rubin Jeff Rubin Show,â about video games, comics books and other nerd fetish items.
The Splitsider's editor, Adam Frucci, says more podcasts will be on the way. âThe network acts as a record label of sorts, picking the best podcasts from New York and releasing them,â he wrote in an e-mail.
