A Champion of the Book Takes to the iPad

By JOHN WILLIAMS

Gass has written a 15,000-word essay called “Abstractions Arrive: Having Been There All the Time,” a collaboration with the noted photographer Michael Eastman, that can be read only on an iPad equipped with iBooks 2. It's a surprising move by Mr. Gass, whose 1999 essay “A Defense of the Book” is cherished by devotees of the old-fashioned printed book who are distressed by the onrushing digital future. On our sister blog Bits, David Streitfeld recently spoke to Mr. Gass to learn more about the project.
