This week in The New York Times Book Review, Liesl Schillinger reviews Lydia Netzer's first novel, âShine Shine Shine.â In the novel, Maxon Mann is on a mission to the Moon while his wife, Sunny, struggles with earthly concerns in Norfolk, Va. Ms. Schillinger writes:
In outer space, Maxon struggles to maintain his connection with NASA; on Earth, in a hospital, his mother-in-law clings to life, and his wife prepares to give birth. âOne hung on, one pushed forward,â Netzer writes. âAs one pushed forward the other was pushed forward as well. It was a death and a life happening, all at the same long time.â Maxon asks, âWhy do I do these things?â âShine Shine Shineâ provides such answer as there is: A human life cannot be programmed; it simply happens, and continues, until it doesn't.
On this week's podcast, Ms. Schillinger talks about âShine Shine Shineâ; Julie Bosman has notes from the field; Thomas Edsall discusses Joseph Stiglitz's new book about economic inequality; and Gregory Cowles has best-seller news. Sam Tanenhaus is the host.
