Duke Acquires Papers of Abraham Joshua Heschel

By FELICIA R. LEE

Duke University has acquired the papers of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, the influential scholar, writer and theologian, the university announced Monday. The collection has never before been available to scholars and includes manuscripts, correspondence, publications, documents and photographs over a 50-year period.

Mr. Heschel, who died in 1972, was a vivid presence in the civil rights movement and protests against the Vietnam War. He co-founded Clergy Concerned About Vietnam and served as a Jewish liaison with the Vatican during the Second Vatican Council. The papers include notes and drafts for nearly all of his published works, as well as correspondence with leading religious figures, including Martin Buber and Reinhold Niebuhr. Also included in the collection are his social documents: correspondence with organizers, speeches and even hate mail.

The archive will open for research after conservation review and arch ival processing are complete. The opening will be announced on the Web sites of the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Duke and the university's Center for Jewish Studies.
